SFBT is a short-term future-focused therapeutic approach which helps clients change by constructing solutions rather than “solving” problems. A client’s life frequently already contains components of the desired solution, which serves as the basis for ongoing change. The ability to articulate what the changes will be like is often more important than understanding the details and causes of the problem.
The first step in SFBT is to assist the clients in envisioning a clear and detailed picture of their ideal future which creates hope and expectations so that a solution becomes feasible. In other words, SFBT focuses on the desired future and how it will be better when things change. The desired future directs the therapy and keeps it focused and brief. SFBT also emphasizes on client strengths and resources, as a way of helping clients recognise how to use their resources to bring about changes, and to explore when they have already accomplished some of their goals.
Instead of limiting sessions or time, SFBT therapists will assist clients identify goals and create plans of action to achieve those goals. Nonetheless, therapy sessions tend to be briefer when they concentrate on the desired future and how realistically to reach it rather than getting bogged down in exploring the past. Treatment typically lasts for six to eight sessions, with the therapist only intervening when absolutely necessary. Therapists that use SFBT adhere to the ethical principle of giving clients the most effective treatment in the most time efficient manner so that clients can get on with living their lives.
